Creative Crush: Lush's Mo Constantine

Creative Crush

Lush's wonderful new product "Fun" is known as "Bathtime playdough" in our house.

The Minis and I absolutely love the brightly coloured squishy textured goop that can wash hair, faces, bodies and also be made into whatever the imagination decides.

I had the pleasure of asking Lush's Mo Constantine about  how Fun came into being; Mo is the Co-Founder of Lush alongside husband Mark, and now oversees the production of all handmade cosmetics for Lush. Mo is perhaps most famous for inventing the bath bomb, one of Lush's best known products.

1.What inspired you to create "Fun"?
I was investigating making a cornstarch mucilage for delicate skin and came up with a hand wash called Putty For Your Hands, which is excellent for irritated or sore skin and FUN is an extension of that product but without the oatmeal. FUN is a 4 in 1 multi-use product you can wash with, use as a bubble bath, wash your hair with or wash your clothes with it too!

2.How do you approach creating a new product? What process do you go through to get ideas?
“A variety of things happen to you throughout the creative process. I visited South Africa recently and liked how some South African words sounded and this has given me inspiration for new products.  I’ll engage in conversations via social media with our staff and customers, who always have lots of ideas for what products they would like to see in the range. I also like to look through old cosmetics recipes and cookery books especially The Fat Duck! When you let your mind relax and open up enough, you will find inspiration.”

4.What has been your most exciting product in your opinion?
Apart from creating FUN, I think creating the original bath bomb was very exciting. Also, inventing the shampoo bar. This is a solId preservative free shampoo bar which lasts for up to 80 washes and eliminates the need for packaging.  THAT was a great moment.

5.Which part of the creative process do you love most?
Knowing that you have a really good new product the first time you make it and then being able to recreate it again is the most challenging but rewarding part of the creative process.

6. Have you heard of creative or unusual uses for it?
We love FUN in our house, and it is has been tried and tested on my 6 grandchildren. We had so much fun inventing it.  I haven’t heard of any unusual uses but I’m sure I will as people experiment with it.

Fun is available from LUSH stores at online priced at £5.00.
